The collection mostly reflects my long playing albums from college and school days. Wherever possible, I have bought the CD release of a 60s or 70s vinyl. After spending decent money on a CD, the worst thing that can happen is CD rot. Therefore, this operation, I call it Operation Lost Glory.

The idea is to back up Audio CDs as high quality WAV files on to hard disks. Each CD digests nearly 600-700 MB space. I just finished WAVing my 2-in-1 Collectables releases of Percy Faith albums. They took up 6.35 GB.

Issues:

0. What is the best way to preserve Audio CDs, as they are?

1. Are HDDs the best way to store files for eternity? For now, I am storing the music on HDDs.

2. The best 'free' software for ripping CDs. I chose cDex and am very happy with it, especially its error correction algorithm is pretty impressive. I own an iPod and I found the iTunes very good too.

To be continued...

Ah! Temptations!

When India toured the West Indies in '76, radio was the only way of getting cricket commentary. If memory serves right, it was Radio Trinidad that used to play some good music during lunch breaks. That's when I heard "Masterpiece" for the first time.

Of course, didn't know it WAS Masterpiece till 1977 when a neighbour in Delhi lent me the "The Temptations Masterpiece" LP. Now, about 25 years later, I FINALLY got the CD remaster.

[Guess, nostalgia is an important element when enjoying music. Often there are things from your past life that you can associate with some piece of music. For me, Masterpiece always brings back memories of ]

Masterpiece is a 13-minute track where the group attempts jamming with an orchestra. And songs like Law of the Land (a protest song) and Plastic Man made the disc really worth the buy.

If you listen to The Commodores, Jackson Five, Barry White, and The Manhattans, you will like The Temptations. Their top song: My Girl.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chandrashekars.blogspot.com/2004/08/ah-temptations.html' title='Ah!
